It takes the Game Boy CPU signals pumps it through the firmware and it produces an image on your new LCD. Essentially it’s the electronic chip or chips that take the signals from the Game Boy CPU and via code or firmware (we’ll call it). Let’s talk for a minute about FGPA, this is what all these new LCD mods use. It was also very “period” feel as the LCD panel was from the era the console was from. The AGS-101 was a good rather simple mod to the GBA. The GBC front light was something I never tried but I know lots did. Only 3 years ago the only LCD mods you could do were an AGS-101 mod to the GBA or a front light panel to the GBC. Now although this is a great thing for us modders and also the more casual modders or even the “drop-in generation” it is starting to become a very crowed fast moving market, which has caused issues. With the introduction and affordability of FPGA electronics and also lots of very talented electronic engineers getting involved the hardware and LCDs options that are now available are growing exponentially like a COVID-19 spike on a graph. The world of Game Boys has changed massively in the last 18 months.
